Our Father was born in Uniontown, PA.
In 1942 he joined the Navy,
Our Father never spoke much
of his Navy days to us kids.
But he did talk about it with other family members.

GREAT NEWS!! : )
I have just received information from the Navy on my Father,
We now know the name of the ship our Father served on.

Nauset (AT–89) was laid down 10 August 1942 by the Cramp Shipbuilding Co., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; launched 7 September 1942;
and commissioned 2 ‘March 1943; Lt. (j.g.) H. K. Wombacher in command.

Following shakedown off the mid-Atlantic and New England coasts, Nauset departed Norfolk, 28 April, and sailed, via Bermuda, to
Mers-el-Kebir, Algeria, arriving 26 May. There she performed towing and salvage operations along the North African coast. Detached in
early July, she departed Bizerte on the 8th and steamed eastward to participate in the invasion of Sicily. On the 10th she joined the “Cent”
Attack Force and anchored less than three miles off the Scoglitti beaches to await calls for assistance.

Heavy surf, indefinite landmarks, and inexperienced boat crews took their toll, keeping Nauset busy for the next two weeks: at first in the
Scoglitti area, then at Licata and Gela. By the end of the month her operational area had expanded to Palermo, whence she departed, in
mid-August, to tow Shubrick to Malta for repairs. Back in Sicilian waters within a week, she continued salvage operations and towing
services from the southern beaches to Palermo until the 23rd. On the 24th, Nauset arrived at Bizerte, completed several local salvage and
towing assignments, and then staged for her last operation “Avalanche,” with Salerno its target.

On 7 September, Nauset departed the Tunisian coast with a Royal Navy boat crew as passengers, their boat, an LCA(HR)—assault craft
equipped with hedgehog projectors as deck cargo, and hedgehogs and dynamite in her holds. Escaping damage during aerial attacks on the
8th, the tug arrived in the vicinity of the US lowering position soon after “D-day,” 9 September, began. Moving further in toward the
“Uncle” beaches, AT–89 commenced lowering the LCA(HR), and by 0230, the British craft had shoved off to explode her hedgehog
charges in the shallow waters off the beaches, thus, hopefully, clearing the area of mines. Nauset, in the meantime, stood by to await the
craft’s return for replenishment.

At 0430, the Luftwaffe paid its first visit to the Allied vessels. Forty minutes later enemy aircraft again flew over the ships in the Gulf of
Salerno. Bombs, from a plane heard, but not seen, exploded in close proximity to the tug. Fire enveloped Nauset’s entire boat deck and
broke out in the motor and generator rooms, cutting all power. She began to list heavily to port and without pressure in the fire plugs, the
fires spread quickly.

The tug Intent, followed by Narragansett, immediately joined in the battle to save the ship, attaching tow lines and turning on their fire
hoses, they stood in toward the nearest beach. Burned and wounded men were soon transferred to Intent, while the uninjured continued
the battle. The deck fires were extinguished, but those below raged. Flooding soon broached the critical point and Nauset was abandoned.

After abandonment, the tug righted itself to a 20’ list, raising hopes for saving the ship. The captain, Lt. Joseph Orleck, the first lieutenant
and the chief bos’n reboarded her to make lines fast from Narragansett. Within seconds, however, a final explosion, probably caused by a
mine, rocked the ship. Nauset broke in two and sank, taking the captain and the first lieutenant with her.

Of her wartime complement of 113, 18 were known dead or missing and 41 suffered severe injuries.

Nauset received two battle stars for her brief service in World War II.

Our hearts & prayers go out to the families
of those that were lost on September 9, 1943.

According to information we received from the Navy
Our Father is "Listed as survivor of the sinking of the USS Nauset"

And we have information on the crew that is not included
in the text of the USS Nauset above.

They "Remained in the area, subjected to bombing and
shore battery shelling for a period about thirty hours, Following
the sinking of the USS Nauset"

flag

While serving our Father saved some of his shipmates,
Even through he was hit by shrapnel in the leg.
Our Father received medals and a Purple Heart,
And was relieved of his duty with an Honorable Discharge.

Our Father's career in the Navy was short lived,
He joined at the end of 1942 and was assigned to the Nauset from
the day it was commissioned March 2, 1943 and in the beginning
of 1944 was discharged because of the injuries
he received on September 9, 1943.

Our Father was a true hero.
Not only to his children but to others too,
We salute our Dad, a job very well done.

We are still going through the papers,
And we are waiting for more information to arrive.
So the Navy section of this page will be changing as
information arrives and updates are made.

I am looking for anything on the USS Nauset AT-89 on-line
to see what ships and people they saved.
My Father served on it from beginning to end,
all the stories I read that involve the Nauset, lets us know
the things our Father participated in and the places he traveled to.

I wish he was here so much,
Going through all of this with us
telling us the stories.
He is truly missed

I am also on the hunt for more pictures of the USS Nauset AT-89 and its crew,
If you or someone you know has any pictures, Or find them on-line
maybe you will be willing to share the pictures or links with us.

My Dad met my Mother at a dinner party,
They fell in love & were married in February 1965
Here is a Wedding picture of our parents,
Mom (Virginia) And Father (Albert)

Floating HeartsMom Dad WedFloating Hearts

They had seven children.
Rose, Michael, Me (Lori), Charlene, Linda, Albert & Mark,
And Grandparents to 13 beautiful Grand kids,
Some he has never seen : (

Out of all of us kids, I was the closest to him.
My Dad & I did just about everything together.
He would take me to buy new shoes,
We would go to the grocery store and
anything else he was doing.

Some of my Dad’s favorite things to do were camp and fish.
We all went on so many trips together.
There were times it was just the two of us
I loved going fishing with him.

I remember he would come upstairs at
3A.M. to wake me up so we could go fishing.
He uses to say
"Time to get up we have to get the fish early,
So they can have breakfast"
I would jump up, get dressed
And go down stairs where my Mom and Dad were making breakfast.
We would all eat together.
Then we would put all the Gear in the car & hitch up the boat.
My Mom would kiss us both and say....
"I love you."
My father would get in the car and ask
"Are you ready to go get the big fish today?"
and I would always say
"I am ready Daddy lets go"

fishing with dad

We would travel to Lake Erie or Pymatuning Lake.
These were two of our favorite places to fish.
Here’s a picture of one of our favorite Fishing spots:

Lake Erie

My Father owned a 16' Mirro Craft.
I am currently looking for a picture of the boat he had to place here.
He named it "The Lori Charlene"
after my sister & me.

So many fond memories of trips we took together,
Our cousin's would sometimes accompany us
when we would go camping or take the boat out.
The stories we all could tell (big grin)

Every time I go there now
I think of those days.
When I catch a fish, I say
"This is for you Dad."
We had such great times.

As I was growing, my Dad came down with HD (Huntington's Disease),
He started shaking and could no longer work.
We watched him go through major changes the things that HD was doing to him.
It broke our hearts to see him have to go through all of it,
My Father was a strong man who always took care of everyone else.
We just wanted to take it from him and make him better again :' (
I wish every day that we had more time.

Please check out my Huntington's Disease link's page.
The link to it is at the bottom of this page.
Learn about HD & how it affects every family member.

We are so glad you were there for one of our happiest days.

We all had a great time at our wedding we danced and laughed thru the night.
Soon after our Father did get worse.
I said to my husband
"Let's take Dad fishing cause I don't know how much longer he will be with us"
My husband said "Great idea"
We took Dad fishing for the last time.
I will never forget that day.
Dad caught a lot of fish. : )
And we did not catch a thing.
My husband Russ cleaned them and Mom cooked the fish for Dad.
That day and so many others will always be with us.

Unfortunately we were right shortly after he got worse,
My Mother could no longer give him the care he needed
because of her own health issue's.
We could not care for him either.
We just had a baby. He did not get to know his grandson
which I know he would be very proud of.
My Mother had no choice but to place him in a nursing home.
A while after being put in he passed away.

We discussed bringing him home for Christmas Day.
It was our first Christmas in our new home,
And we thought it would be nice to have him with us.

On December 16 when we woke the phone rang,
It was my sister Charlene,
She told us that Dad had just passed away,
And they needed family members to come and identify the body.

I told her that Russ & I wanted to go too.
We stopped to pick up Charlene & Mom then headed for the hospital.
It WAS one of the hardest things to do in my life time so far.

Love You

That night I wanted to take down the Christmas decorations.
But my husband Russ told me to let them burn all night for him,
That Dad would see them and know we LOVE him.

Now on every December 16,
Thanks to my wonderful Husband Russ
We leave the Christmas light's burn all night.

Christmas Lights

We still love & miss you Dad.

Dad's Vase

My Husband Russ made me this beautiful vase.

I have always kept the
blue & white Carnations that came in

The plant we had sent to Dad's funeral,

I also placed in it 2 Green Carnations,

For our
Scottish-Irish heritage and one balloon that say's "I love you."

I have kept it all these years,

When I got my first computer desk, it was one of the first things to be placed on it.

It still sits on my desk next to my computer screen.

In HONOR of my Father!

Now here's a couple of family photo's below.

A Father Means

A Father means so many things...

A understanding heart,

A source of strength and support

Right from the very start.

A constant readiness to help

In a kind and thoughtful way.

With encouragement and forgiveness

No matter what comes your way.

A special generosity and always affection, too

A Father means so many things

When he's a man like you.
